70 Panopaea (pan'-ə-pee'-ə, IPA: /ˈpænəˈpiːə/) is a large main belt asteroid. It orbits close to the Eunomia asteroid family. However, it is a dark, primitive carbonaceous C-type asteroid and not related to the parent body of the Eunomia family which consists of S-type asteroids. Panopaea was discovered by H. Goldschmidt on May 5, 1861. It was his fourteenth and last asteroid discovery. It is named after Panopea, a nymph in Greek mythology.
