To claim that the greater diversity of accents ranging from Boston in the North through Georgia in the South is due to imitation of prestidgous English accents is ridiculous. English ships sailed into Charleston, Philadelphia, NYC and Boston. Obviously the English planted the seed and yes, there is an influence, but the accent diversity is largely due to isolation, NOT contact. By 1776 Americans were already noticeably speaking different from their English brethren. The causation was simple, it was the natural evolution of a language. If the world had remained in a subsistence style economy without modern media, railroads, etc. the two languages clearly would've branched off from each other.
