[edit] Welcome
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Help pages
- Tutorial
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
Here are some other hints and tips:
- I would recommend that you get a username. You don't have to log in to read or edit articles on Wikipedia, but creating an account is quick, free and non-intrusive, requires no personal information, and there are many benefits of having a username. (If you edit without a username, your IP address is used to identify you instead.)
- When using talk pages, please sign your name at the end of your messages by typing four tildes (~~~~). This will automatically produce your username (or IP address) and the date.
If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my Talk page, or type {{helpme}} on this talk page and a user will help you as soon as possible. I will answer your questions as far as I can. Again, welcome!
Thank you again for contributing to Wikipedia. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 23:22, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Your edits to Age of Enlightenment
Thanks for contributing to the article, but I had to remove your changes. We don't add our own personal opinions or commentary to articles; doing so violates the Wikipedia:Neutral point of view policy. If you'd like to discuss the article and suggest changes, comments can be added to Talk:Age of Enlightenment. Or you can edit the article directly, just be sure to write in a neutral fashion. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 23:22, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks Jim. You were (of course) intended to find my comments asap and remove them. My point however is that the current entry on the Enlightenment is useless for research purposes. It says things that are simply false. But, as importantly, it misleads the reader as to the historical scope and intellectual thrust of the movement. I could recommend some books that your readers could read on the topic. I could spend a bit of time on this myself, but I'm a doctoral student in the middle of teaching 3 classes and writing a dissertation. I simply don't have time to engage in this particular project right now. My suggestion would be to hand it over to a reputable historian/philosopher who specializes in the era. All the best to you.
(And I will register at some point once I decide to do some serious work for you folks.) All the best!
- We can use your help! I hope you find the time to contribute to the project. Regards, Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 03:14, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
- Also (if and when you have some time), can you take a look at Talk:Age of Enlightenment and possibly note the biggest problems you see with the article as it stands now? -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 03:23, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
