People are offended by whatever offends them at the time (eg. blackface). You can say 'i didnt mean it to be taken that way' (as racism against blacks), but you cant say 'your reaction is wrong' (for being offended) - as i believe the removed line was saying.

I hope that clears up a little what i am trying to get at - that the stigma against blackface is there for very good reasons (one being that some - not all- blackface has been very racist eg. birth of a nation). This stigma therefore isnt something you can call 'baseless'. To do so (to me) would be like saying it is 'baseless' for people to think that birds can fly when some birds can't... Not the right way to phrase it if you know what i mean
