Discussion is open on the Paulette Goddard talk page. If you do not reconcile the discrepancies in your entries I am going to revert the birthyear. If she "shaved" years as you stated and lied about her age, then how do you know she was not also the source of the info in the clippings? She also would not have lied about her age at the time of entry into the Follies, if anything, she would have at that age lied to make herself older in order to participate. The discrepancies at Ziegfeld are due to overlooking her entry in 1924 by a later editor. Amerindianarts 19:33, 7 September 2005 (UTC)

OK, but if it comes down to 1910 or 1911, I'd say the evidence is strongly in favor of the earlier year. I recall reading somewhere a long time ago that when someone asked when she was born she trotted out the 1914 birth year, but then the person to whom she was speaking pointed out that she was a married woman in 1927, and Goddard conceded that the 1914 year may have been a mistake. Clearly the fact that her birthyear (again, 1910 on her gravestone in Ronco cemetery in Switzerland) is still a question proves that she was evasive (to use a mild term) regarding the matter, and that is understandable, given that many (if not most) actresses shave years off their age. Even some male actors do that!! If she had been born in 1914 (which is almost impossible) she MIGHT have had to lie to work at Ziegfeld, although there are plenty of other ways to look at it, since she could have obtained a fake birth certificate or statement from her mother, as Joan Crawford did when she got married for the first time and wanted to pretend her year of birth was 1908. Betty Grable was born in 1916 and was working in 1929, with the blessing of her mother. Ditto June Havoc (same years). Ditto Ann Miller (if you go by the year 1923, and not the year 1919, as there is a discrepancy between her words and chronological reality, but she got her way and her year of birth if recorded officially in MOST places as 1923.) There were also indications that she may have been born as early as 1905, in which case she would not have had to lie at all to do anything by 1924, but the 1905 year of birth is only a matter of one of her servants attesting that they had seen some government paper with that year of birth on it, but that won't carry enough weight to make 1905 the correct (and more importantly, ACCEPTED) year of her birth. In any case just putting a question mark leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Better to put "born on June 3, 1910 (but some sources indicate 1911)" rather than just put a question mark, leaving her age at death as 79 (which is how it reads). 67.100.52.10 20:09, 7 September 2005 (UTC)
