[edit] Formatting references

The Help Desk answered your question about how the Surat article was messed up. Here is a little more information about how to make references. You added a reference in the References section, numbering it "3", then inserted "(3)" in the Demographics section. References are actually meant to be inserted inline, i.e. in the Demographics section, then Wikipedia automatically numbers the references, displays them in the References section, and puts a numbered link from the cited sentence down to the particular reference.

The easiest way to insert a reference is to cut and paste the following right after the sentence you want to cite:

<ref>{{cite web
  | author =
  | title =
  | publisher =
  | url =
  | date =
  | accessdate = }}</ref>

Then just fill in the fields. I did this for three of the references in the Surat article. You can edit the article to see how to make a reference. Sbowers3 21:33, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Please refrain from making test edits in Wikipedia articles, such as those you made to Lamar Consolidated High School, even if your ultimate intention is to fix them. Such edits appear to be vandalism and have been reverted. If you would like to experiment again, please use the sandbox. Thank you. ParticleMan (talk) 18:23, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
