- Blue and green refer to the air and ground assets of the Battalion, and further allude to the close relationship with Infantry (blue) and Armor (green) units of the Division.
- The red and yellow flash connotes the prominent role of electronic signals intelligence in modern warfare.
- The Cavalry saber, flash and quartered field, collectively suggest the blending of the traditional with the latest modern developments in intelligence, reconnaissance, security and electronic warfare capabilities within the Battalion.

- The black horse's head suggested by the arms of the Province of Naples, refers to the participation of elements of the Battalion in Italian campaigns of World War II.
- The Torii gate alludes to service in Korea and two flashes connote awards of the Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation.

- A coat of arms was approved for the 501st Military Intelligence Battalion on 6 November 1980.
- That design was cancelled and a new design/the current design approved on 21 September 1993.
