49th Armored Division (United States)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 49th Armored Division —nicknamed the Lone Star— was one of two armored divisions of the United States Army National Guard, redesignated from the 36th Infantry Division (the "T-Patchers") after World War II, and organised and federally recognized on February 24, 1947.
The 49th was ordered to active federal service in October 1961 at Dallas and reverted to state control in August 1962. The 49th was deactivated in 1968 and re-organised into three separate brigades, the 36th, 71st and 72d. The division was reactivated on November 1, 1973, with its headquarters at Camp Mabry, Austin, Texas.
On July 18, 2004 the division was re-flagged and again designated as the 36th Infantry Division. Prior to its redesignation, the 49th was capstoned to the U.S. Army III Corps and stood as the only fully functional, reserve component, armored division in the U.S. Army. (The 50th Armored Division in the north eastern states had been eliminated by consolidation with the 42d Rainbow Division in the early 1990s.)
