The 42nd Regiment of Foot was also known as the 43rd Regiment of Foot between 1747 and 1749.

The 43rd (Monmouthshire) Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment of the British Army. It was raised as Thomas Fowke's Regiment of Foot in 1741, renamed the 54th Regiment of Foot in 1747, and became the 43rd Foot in 1751. A transport {name unknown} lost November 14 1760 ^[1]on Sable Island carring troops of the 43rd (Monmouthshire) Regiment of Foot. {See Sable Island link to Ships of war lost in 18th Century}. In 1881 it amalgamated with the 52nd (Oxfordshire) Regiment of Foot, to form the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.

Prior to amalgamation, the regiment was involved in a number of prominent campaigns. These included the American War of Independence, where they were captured at Yorktown in 1781, a lengthy involvement in the Peninsular War against Napoleon, the Battle of New Orleans against General Jackson in 1815, and the Indian Mutiny.^[2]
