Hi,

With commencement of investigation of railway link from Pakistan to China, things could get most interesting. The question of gauge is a major issue, as there are no fewer than four gauges in wide spread use in the vicinity, 1676mm, 1435mm, 1524mm and 1000mm. Different countries benefit more or less depending on which gauge(s) are chosen. Dual gauge can be used to allow several players to share a single route with separate gauges provided for each. Not all gauges are equally easy to make into dual gauge, basically the Russian gauge has to be kept separate. The countries involved should offer each other the option of dual gauge in their areas at a later date, and install dual gauge sleepers as a minumum.

Bogie exchange, variable gauge axles and containerisation can also overcome gauge incompatibilities.
