I am sorry ed but Americas is a term created recently by the United States to determine a difference between the White English speakers and the rest of the American nations. The truth is that America is a continent that was named in 1521 long before the territories of the 13 colonies was even explored. Noteamericano is used as a geographical zone in Spanish not as a continent. Americas in Spanish is used to include the three zones in America (North, central and south) The fact that we Spanish speakers use norteamericano does not imply that we accepted the concept of two different continents. Do not try to put words in our mouths that we have not said. It is true that in the USA there are two Americas but that just reinforces the point that US people do not want to be included in the same continent as the Latin Americans. Even further you just have to ask people that supposedly went to school, how they think The Americas is divided. The typical answer would be

  • North America
  • Central America
  • South America

And some of them actually include Mexico in Central America.

Do a little more research out side your Anglo world and realize that the concept of two different continents for America is only a matter of US perspective and arrogance. By the way the Europeans could care less about this and they use the term indistinctively. After all we all Americans had to fight with them for the right of being called Americans. So the argument that the Europeans call the US people Americans is not relevant. Although if you explain to them the discrepancy they, for the most part, do not have a problem in accepting the fact that America is a continent and its peoples are Americans. Historically and geographically the concept America to be a continent is older -by couple hundred years- than the USA.

Thanks for explaining all that. No one else has taken the trouble to make it as clear as you have. Now I have to figure out how to consolidate the discussion. Perhaps definitions of America or talk:America or America (disambiguation). Uncle Ed 15:54, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
