The parallel 39° north formed the original southern boundary of the British Colony of Pennsylvania. However, a previous royal grant had given the land south of the parallel 40° north to the British Colony of Maryland. The Mason-Dixon Line was drawn between 1763 and 1767 as the compromise boundary between the overlapping claims of these two colonies.

From west to east, the parallel passes through the following states: California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey.

The 39th parallel north cuts through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland.
