WHO IS MIKHAIL GORBACHEV
Mikhail Gorbachev, born March 2nd, 1931.He was a member of the communist part from 1950-1991, up till the collapse of the communist party in December 1991. Gorbachev was elected general secretary in 1985 for the communist party. He was also awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1990, and at the age of sixteen, he was awarded the Order of Red Banner of Labor. He is married to Raisa Gorbachyova.
WHAT DID HE DO?
Gorbachev was still under the influence of communism, so to help bring the country out of its current state; he offered the people bits of “justice” and “freedom” over time. Such things he did was introduce different policies: combating corruption and the abuse of privilege by the political classes. He also aimed to liberalize freedom if the press “gradually” He also introduce alcohol reforms to the soviet union, to help control the widespread of alcoholism in the soviet union.
Why?
Gorbachev introduced glasnost, his alcohol reforms, better working conditions, and extra pay for working over time, political freedoms, ect. All for one common goal, to help “Modernize” Russia. By offering people better working conditions and more pay, it helped to insure the quality of the Soviet Union’s goods, by bringing in alcohol reforms and glasnost; he was able to control the state of the soviet people. Gorbachev was able to help modernize the Soviet Union and bring freedom to his people, however this had a negative effect. The communist party was not happy, and put Gorbachev under house arrest, up until Boris Yeltzin stood up to a tank, and negotiated with the government, signalizing the end of communism in Russia.
