[edit] Early history
The 336 FS was constituted on 22 August 1942 and activated on 12 September 1942. The initial cadre of pilots and aircraft were absorbed from 133 Squadron of the Royal Air Force (one of the famed Eagle Squadrons).

On September 23, 1942 the 4 FG moved to its initial airfield at Debden; however, the 336 FS moved to a satellite field at Great Sampford. They conducted operations from there until rejoining the group at Debden on 30 October 1942.
