.aero (aeroplane) is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) used on the Internet's Domain Name System. It is the first gTLD based on a single industry, and is reserved for aviation-related businesses. It was created in 2002 and is operated by SITA. There is also a Dot Aero Council created and controlled by SITA, which SITA supposedly consults on .aero policies.
The .aero domain is reserved for companies, organizations, associations, government agencies, and individuals in aviation and related industries.
In a communication with the .aero registry (aero.enquiries@sita.aero), they though released the following which explains sites like sex.aero and vista.aero (a free mail service, see below):
"We do check personally the eligibility of every single customer who applies for registering a .aero domain and once we make sure they are a genuine member of the aviation community, we issue a .aero ID, which allows registration of .aero domain name. All our customers agree that they will use their .aero domains in the best interest of the aviation community. From then onwards, we are not in the position of checking or controlling the .aero domain names that our customers register, as it is their choice."
As such, just like .com one can register any site under .aero, as long as one states at registration time for the .aero ID that one has something to do with aviation.
Currently, two-letter codes under .aero are reserved for airlines according to the IATA Airline Designators, while three-letter codes are reserved for airports, according to the IATA airport codes.
Registrations are processed via accredited registrars.
[update needed] The .aero domain name was approved for a 5-year term expiring December 17, 2006 as part of a "proof of concept" of new TLD's. SITA has applied for renewal of this agreement. The agreement was extended in October 2006 for another six month term until June 17, 2007[1] and again in June 2007 until December 17, 2007.[2]
Microsoft currently has a limited invite of email names bearing @vista.aero as a way to promote Windows Vista.
