To be accurate, the rear transaxle design did meant that no space was taken up in the cabin by a transmission. Sure, front-drive cars can have a transverse engine, but rear-drive? Also, the space taken in the cabin by the prop-shaft is negligible, if any at all (I've worked on the donuts but can't recall if the shaft required a bulge into the cabin floor or not).
