2007 Women's College World Series

The 2007 Women's College World Series was held May 31st through June 6th, 2007 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Eight NCAA Division I college softball teams met after having advanced through a 64-team bracket to play at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. The official host for the event was the University of Oklahoma.
After successfully advancing through the regional and super regional rounds of the 2007 NCAA Division I Softball Tournament, eight teams advanced to Oklahoma City. Arizona, Baylor, Tennessee, Texas A&M, DePaul, Washington, Arizona State, and Northwestern all won their super-regionals and made the trip to the 2007 Women's College World Series. Oklahoma was the lone seed of the predetermined top eight not to advance as they fell to DePaul in super regional action.
The first pitch of the 2007 Women's College World Series was Thursday, June 16, at 12:00 PM CDT. The 2007 tournament was only the second time in WCWS history in which 16 games were played (the other being the 2005 Women's College World Series).
The best-of-three championship series featured Arizona and Tennessee. After facing elimination three times, the Arizona Wildcats advanced to the championship series by beating DePaul in an elimination game and winning the next two against Washington with the latter game being winner advancing to the series. Tennessee advanced to the championship series by beating Texas A&M, Arizona, and finally Northwestern. Monica Abbott of Tennessee had a no-hitter on the first night of the WCWS and also did not allow a run before entering the championship series.
Tennessee won the first game of the series 3-0. Arizona won the second game 1-0,in ten innings and was the first run allowed by Tennessee throughout WCWS action. Arizona won the deciding game, 5-0, winning the school's eighth national title in softball and its second consecutive. All games were televised on ESPN and ESPN2.
Arizona pitcher Taryne Mowatt was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

[edit] Tournament Notes
- Washington's Danielle Lawrie and Tennessee's Monica Abbott each pitched no-hitters on the first day of the tournament, although Lawrie allowed a run. This is the first time a no-hitter has been accomplished since the 2003 Women's College World Series and only the third time in the history of the WCWS that two pitchers had no-hitters on the same day.
- This is the first time that UCLA has not made it to the WCWS.
- Only one game in the entire tournament ended with the losing team scoring more than one run, a record for offensive futility.

- This year's tournament was definitely ruled by pitchers, as a whopping 11 shutouts were thrown over the week, a WCWS record. Tennessee alone didn't allow a run in the entire tournament until the 10th inning of the second game of the finals.
- After fanning 11 Lady Vols in the final game, Arizona’s Taryne Mowatt passed Tennessee’s Monica Abbott for the WCWS single-season strikeout record. Mowatt struck out 76 batters in 2007, while Abbott finished with 75 K’s. (Both passed the previous record held by the previous Arizona pitcher, Alicia Hollowell, who held the record with 65).
- Mowatt’s 60 innings pitched in the 2007 College World Series broke the previous record of 53 held by Michigan’s Jennie Ritter (2005). Mowatt delivered every Arizona pitch in this year’s event.
- Arizona’s Kristie Fox recorded her 11th hit of the 2007 WCWS, tying the record of UCLA’s Natasha Watley set in 2003.
- The Lady Vols’ Kenora Posey tied the single-season WCWS steals record with four. She shares the top spot with Lowe, who had four steals in 2006, and two others.
- The 2007 event marked the best-attended Women’s College World Series in history. A total of 62,463 fans passed through the gates of ASA Hall of Fame Stadium, including 5,533 for the third game. The 2007 attendance total broke the previous WCWS record (set in 2006) by a staggering 16,341.
