2007 French tourists killing in Mauritania

2007 French tourists killing in Mauritania happened on December 24, 2007.[1] The lone survivor had his two adult sons killed along with his brother and a friend. [2] They were shot dead while on holiday in Mauritania.[3] A fifth person was seriously injured.[4] The attack happened near Aleg, 250 km east of capital Nouakchott.[5] The victims were attacked while they were having a picnic.[6] Mauritanian authorities arrested nine people on January 7, 2008.[7] An assault rifle was recovered by police from a location close to the scene of the killings.[8] Mauritanian interior minister blamed a terrorist sleeper cell for the killings[9] Authorities say suspects are members of an extremist group linked to al-Qaida.[10] The 2008 Dakar Rally was cancelled because of this. The identities of the victims are not yet released.
