2002 Nokia Brier
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 2002 Nokia Brier was the Canadian Men's Curling Championship. It was held from March 9 to March 17, 2002 at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta. It was won by the Albertan foursome headed by Randy Ferbey. Ferbey threw third stones throughout the tournament while his mate (third) David Nedohin threw skip (or fourth) stones. The other two members of the team were second Scott Pfeifer and Lead Marcel Rocque.
The Ferbey team beat the young Ontario foursome of John Morris, Joe Frans, Craig Savill, and Brent Laing by a score of 9-4. The game's pivotal moment came when Ferbey scored four points in the fifth end to tilt an otherwise even and low-scoring game.
Third place in the tournament went to the team skipped by New Brunswick's Russ Howard, while fourth place was taken by Saskatchewan's Scott Blitz.
Here is the final round-robin standings among the twelve teams involved:
| W | L | |
| Alberta (Randy Ferbey) | 9 | 2 |
| Ontario (John Morris) | 8 | 3 |
| Saskatchewan (Scott Bitz) | 7 | 4 |
| New Brunswick (Russ Howard) | 7 | 4 |
| Nova Scotia (Shawn Adams) | 6 | 5 |
| British Columbia (Pat Ryan) | 6 | 5 |
| Manitoba (Mark Lukowich) | 6 | 5 |
| Northern Ontario (Tim Phillips) | 5 | 6 |
| Newfoundland (Mark Noseworthy) | 4 | 7 |
| Territories (Jonathon Solberg) | 3 | 8 |
| Quebec (Francois Roberge) | 3 | 8 |
| Prince Edward Island (John Likely) | 2 | 9 |
Here is the scoring breakdown of the final game:
Ferbey & Co. 2 0 1 0 4 1 0 0 1 X =9 Morris & Co. 0 1 0 1 0 0 1 1 0 X =4
As always, there were a scattering of individual awards at the competition, though they were not (and in fact, are still not) considered important by fans, media, or players, as the team element of the game of curling is held in such esteem. The bonspeil's All-Stars were as follows (First Team All-Stars followed by Second Team All-Stars):
Skips: David Nedohin (Alberta) and John Morris (Ontario) Thirds: Joe Frans (Ontario) and Randy Ferbey (Alberta) Seconds: Scott Pfeifer (Alberta) and Craig Savill (Ontario) Leads: Kelly Moskowy (Saskatchewan) and Marcel Rocque (Alberta)
The MVP Award, called the "Hec Gervais Award" went to David Nedohin
These individual awards suggest a level of dominance by the two final teams that is perhaps not reflective of the closeness in the round robin standings.
