AWM Caption: KAIRI, QLD. 1943-11-22. VX289 BRIGADIER R. BIERWIRTH, OBE DEPUTY ADJUTANT AND QUARTERMASTER GENERAL, 1ST AUSTRALIAN CORPS (1), INSPECTING THE REFORMED 2/12TH AUSTRALIAN FIELD AMBULANCE. THE ORIGINAL UNIT SERVED IN DARWIN, IT LOST A COMPANY AT TIMOR AND ANTOHER AT AMBOINA, AND LATER LOST PRACTICALLY THE WHOLE UNIT WHEN THE CENTAUR WAS SUNK BY THE JAPANESE.
