[edit] The 1UP Show

Main article: The 1UP Show

Since October 21, 2005, 1UP.com has been host to The 1UP Show, a weekly video podcast. The show often presents previews and reviews of games, though it also focuses on video gaming events, interviews with game designers and in-house discussions and debates on gaming topics.

The latest episodes of The 1UP Show (currently in its eighth season) can be downloaded/viewed from their site every Friday, or from podcast managers such as iTunes.

[edit] 1UP Yours

Previously the 1UP Podcast, 1UP Yours is a weekly internet radio show that takes the form of a discussion among several editors from the 1UP network. The radio show began October 21, 2005 as a weekly news show hosted by Jane Pinckard.

As with The 1UP Show, the 1UP Yours podcast has gradually become a more complex and organized radio show. Topics of the podcast include press announcements, news from gaming conferences, and discussion of game design. In its current form, the show is co-hosted by Garnett Lee, Shane Bettenhausen and Shawn Elliott. In the case of the show being short one or more members (most often due to one of the members having left the show), the show will feature guests to fill the fourth spot (also known as "the coveted fourth chair"), often comprised of other writers and editors from the 1Up Network. The podcast is recorded and edited by Andrew "Skip" Pfister.

The initial lineup included Lee and Bettenhausen, as well as Luke Smith and John Davison. However, Smith soon left the network to accept a position at the then Microsoft game development studio Bungie. On August 24, 2007, Mark MacDonald was declared the show's official "fourth chair" member. John Davison then announced that he was leaving the 1UP staff, though he would continue his participation with the podcast despite his change in career. On the October 19th episode, Mark MacDonald announced he would be leaving the show. On the February 1st, 2008 episode, it was announced that GFW editor Shawn Elliott would be filling MacDonald's now-vacant hosting duties. Bryan Intihar was confirmed as the third chair on the January 18th episode of 2008, but left the show shortly after on March 7 after he took a job with developer Insomniac. As of April 18th, the fourth chair is still rotating guest-hosts.

[edit] Format

Generally, the program begins with "Whatcha been playing?", wherein the editors discuss games they are currently playing for fun or, as is more often the case, games they are either reviewing or are previewing.

The second portion of the podcast will typically begin with a report on some of the recent activity on the 1UP message boards. This segment is followed by a more focused feature, which may include a more in-depth discussion on a particular topic (such as reactions to new system launches or the concept of micro-transactions in games) or quasi-regular features such as the Four-Minute Warning, during which the hosts are presented with several gaming-related questions submitted by listeners; they are then given four minutes to discuss. Once the four minutes are up, they move on to the next question.

The third segment reviews the news from the past week, complete with reactions from the editors after each topic is brought up. Occasionally, guests from the industry, including Cliff Bleszinski and Mark Rein from Epic Games, Cameron from Angry Gamer and Ted Price from Insomniac Games will visit the show to discuss their various products or just participate in the program itself. The podcast usually lasts about two hours, and is recorded on Thursdays, with the podcast publishing every Friday.

[edit] EGM Live*

EGM Live* (the asterisk disclaiming that the podcast is "not actually live"), is a supplement to the magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly. Originally similar to 1UP Yours, the podcast featured round-table discussions about subjects usually relevant to upcoming magazine issues. Recently, the podcast has become substantially more structured, with the show being composed of separately recorded segments. Such segments include interviews with game developers and "review crew" gaming reviews led by EGM Reviews Editor Greg Ford and a variety of contributors.

For a period of time, the podcast would end with a "question of the week," a contest in which fans received prizes for correctly answering a trivia question or writing a short essay.

EGM Live* does not have a regular host, but the show is often hosted by Electronic Gaming Monthly Managing Editor Jennifer Tsao.

[edit] GFW Radio

The companion podcast for (now defunct) Games for Windows: The Official Magazine, GFW Radio presents discussions on PC games and events. Occasionally featured is Shawn Elliot's "Heroes of the Web", which offers "dramatic readings" of unintentionally humorous message board posts on the 1UP.com forums or elsewhere.

GFW Radio is hosted by 1UP PC Editor-in-Chief, 'The Black Dragon', Jeff 'Green Bean' Green. Now nicknamed '97.5 The Brodeo' by other 1up podcast teams, GFW Radio's regular lineup includes 1UP PC executive editor Shawn Elliott, managing editor Ryan "Animal" Scott and senior editor/podcast producer Sean Malloy. Editor and Gladstoned columnist Darren Gladstone was a regular contributor until he left for PC World Magazine after the last episode of 2007. 1UP freelancer Robert 'Dr. Maximum Chill, PhD' Ashley AKA Bobito and 1UP Network Intern Anthony Gallegos appear as frequent special guests.

[edit] Retronauts

The Retronauts podcast concerns older ("classic") games and systems and is hosted by 1UP editors Jeremy "T Frog" Parish and Scott Sharkey. Often, an episode will be devoted to the history of a particular gaming franchise, genre or console system. While often being focused on Japanese games, particularly those from the RPG genre, episodes have been devoted to North American titles such as Starcraft. A recurring segment is the "Retro Roundup" wherein older games that have been recently re-released (whether through retail or through services such as Virtual Console or Xbox Live Arcade) are briefly discussed, and whether the games would be recommended for purchase.

While the podcast does still have new episodes, it has not had a consistent release schedule for several months.

Retronauts also produces the supplement video podcast, Bonus Stage, which looks at specific retro tiles more closely. However, Bonus Stage has not been updated since April 9, 2007, and is presumed dead.

[edit] Legendary Thread

Legendary Thread is a podcast mostly devoted to the MMO World of Warcraft and other MMOs. It is hosted by Game Videos managing editor Demian Linn. Usual guests are Jeff Green, editor-in-chief of Games for Windows: The Official Magazine, Sean Molloy of GFW, Karen Chu of the 1UP.com art department, and Ryan Scott of GFW. Former regulars are ex-1up News Editor Luke Smith and Andrew "Skip" Pfister of 1up.com.

[edit] The Sports Game Guy's Sports Anomaly

The newest 1UP Radio podcast, Sports Anomaly presents discussions on both sports games and actual sports. The show is known for its boisterous energy and the panel's frequent, spontaneous chanting. Among these chants is the "Yak Attack", a reference to "the wicked yakker" (or a curveball). Other popular chants are "Day and Date" and "Breaking News". The Sports Anomaly panel includes host Todd "Casual Sports Game Guy" Zuniga, Greg "Play It Safe" Ford, and Bryan "Fragile EAgle" Intihar (the mis-capitalization is intentional to infer Intihar's implied affinity for EA-published games).

[edit] Review Crew

Review Crew is the newest video podcast from 1UP Radio. On the weekly show, members of 1UP's Review Crew discuss the quality of newly-released games. The early shows have featured host Garnett Lee asking guests about the games being covered on that show. The video podcast also features video of the games while they are being discussed. At the end of a segment a letter grade is assigned to the game in accordance to 1UP's review policy. [1][2]

[edit] Broken Pixels

Broken Pixels is a sporadically-released video podcast that originally premiered during one of The 1UP Show's "Not The 1UP Show" episodes. The show features EGM Senior Editor Crispin Boyer, EGM Executive Editor Shane Bettenhausen and Seanbaby. They play games that are commonly perceived as low-quality and make "riff" on the gameplay, character design or the subject matter in a manner similar to Mystery Science Theater 3000, only Broken Pixels is unscripted. Some of the games featured include Bible Adventures, Altered Beast and Night Trap. There is footage of a cut segment involving Superman 64, but the game was "so bad" that the hosts had trouble finding funny things to say about it. Other contributors include former 1UP contributers Mark Mcdonald and Luke Smith and 1UP Reviews Editor Andrew Pfister. As of May 22, 2008 there have been 13 episodes of Broken Pixels released.
