Talk:1 E+9 m²
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Why is the 1 E9 in "calculator" notation but meters squared is in exponential notation? It might be simpler to put the title as 10 with exponent 9 to match m with exponent 2 (or simply write 1 000 000 000 or one billion).
what does the title of this article mean? Adam 23:56, 29 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Sizes listed in on this of the Orders of magnitude (area) are between 1 E9 m² and 1 E10 m². The template for this page Talk:Order of magnitude/template/Area could probably use an update. -- User:Docu
I'm sorry but I still have no idea what that means. An encyclopaedia is supposed to explain things to non-specialist readers. Adam 00:24, 31 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Which part would like better explained, the E-notation? -- User:Docu
I don't understand the heading at all. The article is a list of countries rated by land area. The heading seems to have nothing to do with it all. Adam 12:13, 31 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Maybe it should read something like:
-
- To help compare orders of magnitude of areas, we list here areas of geographical regions in the 1 E9 m² range (from 1,000 km² (1 E9 m²) to 10,000 km² ( 1 E10 m²).
-
- See also: areas of other orders of magnitude.

I have read orders of magnitude as well as this article and I still have no idea what 1 E9 m² means. I assume m2 is "square metres" but other than that I am clueless. The article should have a heading which is comprehensible to lay readers, and an opening paragraph which explains what it is about. Adam 23:45, 31 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- I'd suppose that there is an article in Wikipedia explaining that 1 E9 = 1*109 = 1,000,000,000, but I really didn't find it right now. -- User:Docu
I suppose the main orders of magnitude page could explain how the titles work. (Docu, try scientific notation) Please don't go moving pages though, it took us a LONG time to devise the title scheme and move them all a few years ago. -- Tarquin 17:43, 3 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- We should try to include the article title somewhere in the individual articles as well. -- User:Docu
-
- I don't really see why, or how. -- Tarquin 11:06, 13 Apr 2004 (UTC)
-
- Ah, I see. I would suggest you add "in scientific notation" to the end of that line. -- Tarquin 12:19, 15 Apr 2004 (UTC)
109 or 1,000,000,000 is a much better title that "1 E9", in my opinion. As soon as possible, these pages should concentrate on the common language equivalent (1 billion, in this case), as the whole point of the page is to get a common sense understanding of the scale, right? Also, if these pages start to become exhaustive lists of cities or states or prefectures, then those should start to be arranged regionally (subheadings for Europe, Asia, NAmerica, etc), again so people can find references to which they easily relate: Being an American, references to Manhattan Island or County of Los Angelese make sense to me, but not some place in Finland or the Ukraine...
