[edit] Fair use

  • The image depicts a major historical event.
  • The image is copyrighted and given the circumstances under which it was taken, a free replacement is unlikely to exist.
  • This is a low quality and reduced resolution reproduction of the image, inferior to the higher quality alternatives available from the Associated Press
  • The photograph itself is very famous worldwide and iconic. [1][2]
  • In the article Boris Yeltsin it is used as an illustration of a major historical event in which Yeltsin was a key part, this image is considered to be hugely significant to Yeltsin's entire life (see: [1])
  • In the article Soviet coup attempt of 1991 it is used as a world-famous iconic depiction of this event.
  • In the article Alexander Korzhakov the image is used to depict the historic event in which Korzhakov played a major part and is shown in the image.
This image was nominated for deletion on 2007 July 6. The result of the discussion was temporary keep. This image can certainly be used in any article that discusses the historical importance of the image itself (outside of the caption). Unfortunately, that only applies to Soviet coup attempt of 1991, and then only just barely. I'm keeping it for now, but if the articles are not expanded to mention the significance of the image, then the image should be nominated for deletion again..
