1988 Superbike World Championship season

The 1988 Superbike World Championship season was the inaugural F.I.M. Superbike World Championship season. The season started on April 3 at Donington Park, and finished on October 3 at Manfeild Autocourse after 9 rounds.
American Fred Merkel won the rider's championship and Honda won the manufacturer's championship.

- The points allocation system was: 1st=20, 2nd=17, 3rd=15, 4th=13, 5th=11, 6th=10, 7th=9, 8th=8, 9th=7, 10th=6, 11th=5, 12th=4, 13th=3, 14th=2, 15th=1
- For the first ever Superbike World Championship round at Donington Park the race results were combined to determine an overall winner. The only time that happened in the Superbike World Championship's history.[1]
