The 1978 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season began with the team trying to improve on an 2-12 season. Rookie quarterback Doug Williams helped the team to a 4-4 start to the season before he broke his jaw and was sidelined for the remainder of the season. The defensive unit was ranked 4th in the NFL for the season. Another rookie tight end Jimmie Giles also had an impressive season.
