The 14th Ryder Cup Matches were held at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lytham St Annes, England. The United States team won the competition by a score of 14½ to 9½ points.

The Ryder Cup is a match play event, with each match worth one point. The format used in 1961 changed for the first time from the format used from 1927 to 1959. Instead of 12 36-hole matches, there were 24 18-hole matches. On the first day, 8 foursome (alternate shot) matches were played (4 each in morning and afternoon sessions) and on the second day, 16 singles matches were played (8 each in the morning and afternoon sessions). With a total of 24 points, 12½ points were required to win the Cup.
