This article says that Bejing (China) and Hong Kong will be co-hosting the 2008 games. Is this verifiable? I think it's incorrect but I will not change it until that is confirmed. Smartyshoe 20:30, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
- Hong Kong is the "Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China" - not a separate country from Beijing and the Republic of China. One country is hosting the 2008 olympics. Beijing is the host city. Some events will be in Hong Kong. The situation is not similar to Sweden and Australia hosting the 1956 Olympics.--A Y Arktos 21:12, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
- Well, it's somewhat murky. Hong Kong has a different National Olympic Committee (NOC) than the PRC (i.e. HKG and CHN respectively). Also, elsewhere in Wikipedia (see List of countries), Hong Kong is defined as an "entity considered to be a country". It is obviously not defined as a sovereign nation, but appears in the list of special entities recognized by international treaty or agreement, which is one kind of "country" as per the first article.
