Talk:1924 VFL season

[edit] 1924 Round-Robin Premiership Competition Team Squad members
Nine teams competed in the 1924 home-and-away series; meaning that each team played 16 matches, and had two byes, over the length of the season.
I located the Richmond Squad at page 286 of Hogan's 1996 Tigers Of Old, and constructed the Essendon squad from the information provided at pages 105,106, and 465 of Maplestone's 1996 Flying Higher.
Unfortunately, with the resources available to me, I have been unable to locate any sort of coherent record, of any kind, of the constituent members of either the Fitzroy Football Club's 1924 Finals Squad, or the South Melbourne Football Club's 1924 Finals Squad.
However, in my view, all is not completely lost . . . .
- (1) We must assume that the VFL's player records are 100% correct.
- (2) We must, from (1), accept that the information stored at [1], relating to VFL players for the Fitzroy Football Club is 100% correct.
- (3) We must, again from (1), also accept that the information stored at [2], relating to VFL players for the South Melbourne Football Club is 100% correct.
- (4) It is a matter of fact that, although many individuals might have played fewer senior matches throughout the season, no VFL player could have played more than 16 matches in the eighteen rounds of the 1924 home-and-away season.
- (5) As a consequence of (4), any player for whom the VFL's 1924 records show 17, 18, or 19 matches played for the entire 1924 season, must have played in one, two, or three of the round-robin matches respectively.
- (6) One must, then draw the inescapable conclusion that any player who played 17, 18, or 19 senior matches in 1924, was in his club's Finals Squad.
- (7) The VFL records show that each of the following Fitzroy footballers played at least 17 matches in 1924 and were, I am therefore claiming, very definitely members of the Fitzroy 1924 Finals Squad:
- Bill Adams, Jim Atkinson, Les Bryant, Tommy Corrigan, Horrie Jenkin, Gordon McCracken, Stan Molan, Jack Moriarty, Gordon Rattray, and Len Wigraft.
- (8) The VFL records show that each of the following South Melbourne footballers played at least 17 matches in 1924 and were, I am therefore claiming, very definitely members of the South Melbourne 1924 Finals Squad:
- Harry Alexander, Martin Brown, Roy Cazaly, Bill Condon, Arthur Hando, Ted Johnson, Frank Laird, Charlie Nicholls, Jack O’Connell, Joe Scanlan, Paddy Scanlan, Mark Tandy, and Les Woodfield.
I hope that other contributors with access to other sources can, over time, further supplement the incomplete Fitzroy and South Melbourne Squad Lists.
Finally, I strongly felt that it was better to have this reliable, correct (but incomplete) information within the article immediately; rather, that is, than waiting for the entire set to be completed — something that may not even be possible in 2008, due to old club records unfortunately going astray over time.
