[edit] Summary
Obverse of 1837 half dime. This is the Small Date variety; note that the date appears to be slightly curved, as though in a smile, and looks similar to dates from the Capped Bust type. The Large Date variety has its numerals in a straight line, similar to later Seated Liberty dates. Source, A Guide Book of United States Coins, by Richard (R. S.) Yeoman, ISBN 0794820395
