[edit] Re: Windows Live Messenger 8.5
The final version of Windows Live Messenger 8.5 was released on November 6, 2007 together with all the other Windows Live 2008 suite products, such as Windows Live Mail, Photo Gallery, Writer, and OneCare Family Safety. The announcement for Windows Live Messenger 8.5 can be found here, the official Windows Live Messenger team blog. Here's an except from the source:
-
- "After months of work, and two beta releases the Windows Live Messenger team is proud to release Windows Live Messenger 8.5!"
If you wish to download Windows Live Messenger 8.5 final, go to http://messenger.live.com and download from there. For more information on the Windows Live 2008 suite and how to download, see http://www.windowslive.com
Additionally, I would like to point that the source I had provided IS an official source, directly from the Windows Live Messenger team blog from Microsoft. --Pikablu0530 (talk) 05:48, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

- Thank you Pikablu, for the time you've taken to so patiently explain this to me. I am however, experiencing MAJOR difficulties in my efforts to obtain this software. I've been trying for days, based on Wikipedia information... perhaps it's not yet available to Canadian users.
-
- The pages I'm redirected to, claim that version 8.1 is the most current. I also have an option to click a banner to download the 8.5 BETA (that's what it says). It's a 2.2Mb download (obviously a stub), that continuously hangs at 90% complete. I'm unable to even find a listing for version 8.5 (final or beta) on the Microsoft site, Download.com, Tucows... etc.
-
- I'm no longer doubting that it exists, but I get the impression that downloads are being restricted to specific geographic locations.

- Thank you for your time and patience :) ~ 142.177.26.171 (talk) 08:21, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

- The 2.28mb file WLInstaller.exe is the correct file. Try this link and see if you can get the page. From Windows Live Messenger 8.5 onwards, the setup will be from a unified installer (together with Mail, Photo Gallery, Family Safety, Writer, Toolbar...etc). See Windows Live Installer on Wikipedia for more information. However, seeing that you are having trouble completing the download, I recommend you to try cleaning your temporary internet files or check with your internet service provider.

-
- Additionally, the download IS avaiable on Microsoft Download Center, located here. The version number is 8.5.1302.1018. As mentioned, it is the same 2.28mb file named WLInstaller.exe that you will be downloading. I am definitely sure that the software is not restricted to Canada. --Pikablu0530 (talk) 10:52, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

- Thank you once again Pikablu, for your prompt and courteous reply :). I've actually tried this from several different computers, and several different (local Canadian) locations, all with the same results (whether the browser cache has been dumped or not). From my personal experience, it seems that Canadian users are either being forwarded to a coming soon page, or to a page labelled BETA, where the download of WLinstaller.exe refuses to complete.

-
- I am happy to report though, that I was FINALLY able to obtain the necessary stub-file, and get Windows Live Messenger-8.5.1302.1018 installed!
-
-
-
-
-
- Doing so however, required downloading the file through an anonymous proxy, hiding my true IP-address, and spoofing that I was connecting from (208.77.91.8) an American location. Once behind this proxy, I was quickly able to get exactly what I needed.

-
-
- This brings me straight back to the idea that Microsoft is probably blocking Canadian connections... and quite possibly because version 8.5 final, has not yet been released here.[citation needed] ;)

-
-
-
-
- Regardless, other than the fact that I'm no longer able to log out of Hotmail, everything appears to be functioning flawlessly! Thanks again :) ~ 142.68.47.83 (talk) 12:21, 6 December 2007 (UTC) ~ AKA 142.177.26.171
