[edit] Biography

Æthelgar was a monk at Glastonbury Abbey and then Abingdon Abbey until 964 when he was appointed Abbot of New Minster, Winchester.[1][2] He was consecrated Bishop of Selsey on May 2, 980.[3][2] He succeeded Dunstan as Archbishop of Canterbury in 988, "but lived for a short time afterwards, no more than a year and three months."[4] He was transferred to Canterbury in 988.[3] He may have continued to hold his abbacy along with his bishopric and archbishopric until his death.[2] Æthelgar died on February 13, 990.[5][2]
