Tomo is an illusionist among the seven seishi of Seiryū in Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yugi. In the manga he is in love with Nakago, but the anime does not show this very clearly. He tries to trap Miaka Yuki in an illusion world but it is later broken by Amiboshi. As he tries to kill Amiboshi, he is killed by Suboshi who appears to rescue his brother.

[edit] Statistics

  • Character: "Root", located on the lower right side of his abdomen.
  • Constellation: Libra
  • Height: 184 cm or 6 feet
  • Birthplace: Unknown
  • Hobbies: Teasing and sodomy
  • Weapons: Using a clam shell named Shin (蜃) to watch his illusions as they unfold.
  • Seishi Abilities: Hypnosis and creating illusions. Tomo can not only create visual illusions but illusions of the other senses as well. In addition to this, he can put himself into the illusion as a sort of actor to help things along. His shell can trap a person's mind and body within it. It then extracts their memories and plays a sort of movie scenario for the victim, as is done to Miaka. Tomo can also have Shin memorize things to replay the information at a later time. He also has limited telekenetic powers over the feathers on his headdress.
  • Bloodtype: AB

[edit] Personality

Having faced hardship since childhood, Tomo is sadistic and cruel. His mind is contorted and he is severe with others. It is said he was taken in by dancers when he was young, exposing him to the world of Chinese opera. This fact would explain why he wears a Chinese Opera costume, consisting of a long, brilliant red jacket that has golden shoulders with a black high-collared neck with gold trim, and simple white breeches with long boots, his headdress, and his make-up. Tamahome wastes no time to make fun of the way Tomo looks, though he does not even faze Tomo who explains to Tamahome what his make-up symbolizes, black: loyalty, blue: strategy, and gold: harmony; which is in keeping with traditional Chinese Opera make-up symbolism.

Tomo is in love with Nakago, but Nakago only thinks of Tomo as a fellow Seiryu Seishi. Tomo is one of Nakago's most trusted allies because he freely discusses his plans with him. Nakago also allowed Tomo the task of ridding them of Miaka and the rest of the Suzaku Seven. Like Soi, Tomo has little desire to harm Miaka (perhaps due to his not preferring women), but he would do anything for the sake of Nakago. Also, because of his feelings for Nakago, he does not get along with Soi, although they can work efficiently together at times but mostly they stay apart from one another.

In the Genbu Kaiden tankōbon release, there is a short story describing how Tomo received his clam shell "Shin" from a young woman.
