Description

Sophie Dorthea, Princess of Hannover and Princess of Ahlden, 17th century, Sophia Dorothea of Celle, the daughter of George William, Duke of Brunswick-Luneberg and the Huguenot Eleanor d' Olbreuze. She was the wife of King Georg I. of England. The marriage produced two children, a son, named George Augustus (the later king Georg II. of England) and a daughter, Sophia Dorothea (the later Queen Sophie Dorothea of Prussia). Sophia Dorothea was a pretty and vivacious young woman, but her boorish husband ignored her, prefering to spend his time with his mistresses. She consequently embarked on an affair with the handsome and dashing Swedish Count Phillip von Konigsmark. Despite warnings to keep the liaison discreet, she foolishly flaunted her relationship with her lover, which quickly developed into a much discussed court scandal.

this is not Sophia Dorothea. The portrait represents Francesca Greppi Fani (1658-1732), a noted Roman beauty; see F. Petrucci, Jacob Ferdinand Voet, Roma 2005, p. 111. The painting should be a copy after J.F. Voet, (1639-1689). The original is in Ariccia (Rome). Villa Chigi and is a part of a series of 'beauties'.
