Detail of the death portrait of a wealthy woman, painted between 160-170 AD near the modern-day town of Er-Rubayat in the Fayum. This detail was obtained from the web, but the full portrait is reproduced beautifully in The mysterious Fayum portraits: faces from ancient Egypt by Euphrosyne Doxiadis (1995) H. N. Abrams, plate 21. The original is located in the British Museum in London (EA 65346, acquired in 1939, bequest of Sir Robert Mond). This portrait is sometimes associated with the famous mathematician Hypatia, but she was born roughly two centuries after this portrait was painted.

This is a faithful photographic reproduction of an original two-dimensional work of art. The original image comprising the work of art itself is in the public domain for the following reason:

This applies to the United States, Canada, the European Union and those countries with a copyright term of life of the author plus 70 years.

Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Côte d'Ivoire has a general copyright term of 99 years and Honduras has 75 years, but they do implement that rule of the shorter term.
